A study at West Virginia University found that students who live closer to the Campus Rec Center use it more often and that students who utilize the Campus Rec have higher GPAs and retention rates. Following the passage of a Student Government Association resolution to bring more opportunities for movement to campus, an Active Workspaces pilot program was begun to bring exercise equipment into the spaces students were already occupying. A pilot program was begun and after learning of its success, a Law School SGA Senator requested the initiative be expanded to the Law Library.
In this session, I will discuss the steps taken to bring the Active Workspaces initiative to the Law Library including:
- Partnering with the Campus Rec Center
- Identifying potential locations in the library to place equipment
- Selecting and acquiring the exercise equipment
- Marketing the initiative to the student body
- Student Usage and Response
The Active Workspaces initiative has added value to the by supporting both student mental and physical health along with academics and it gives students yet another reason to visit the library.
Session attendees will gain an understanding of what Active Workspaces are and the ease and potential benefits of instituting such a program.
